bBox team: Movie recommendation

From the series ‚When the bBox team is not @ work’ J
On Friday, it was movie night for the bBox Team. Paulo, our Cybernetical Specialist from Brazil, prepared a very impressive and representative movie for his country, more specifically, for Rio de Janeiro: Tropa de elite – explosive, intrigueing, dinamic, a story that highlights  the efforts  of both the drug lords to protect their business and  the brazilian police to fight against it. Continuous ‚guerra’! Strongly recommend you to see it!
Plot:
Set in 1997, in Rio de JaneiroElite Squad follows the lives and exploits of a BOPE captain named Nascimento and his two potential heirs-in-command, Neto Gouveia and André Matias, rising from the ranks of general PMERJ (the state military police) to BOPE (later it is revealed that Nascimento wants to leave the force because his wife is pregnant with his first child).
While Neto Gouveia is a quick-tempered, tougher man, André Matias refuses to compromise his ideals of peace and equality. The latter is also a student of Law at a university in Rio, where his upper class friends are unaware of his job as a policeman, and are clearly shown as "spoiled" kids that tend to see the police as a repressive unit.
Preceding the visit of Pope John Paul II to Rio, the plot unfolds and we are introduced to the day-to-day drug busting operations inside Brazilian favelas, ruled by well-armed and powerful drug leaders, led by the Brazilian elite unit, BOPE, and the corruption that affects part of the PMERJ.

Filming style:
Tropa de Elite was shot on 35 mm Kodak film, using handheld Panavision cameras. The handheld camera gives Tropa de Elite a strong documentary style.

There is prominent film grain present. Contrast is often pushed, so highlights tend to be blown. Level of detail is good, though not spectacular. The use of a handheld camera combined with a lot of panning/movement is causing a lot of motion blur. Black levels overall are good, but shadow detail is a bit lacking during many of the the night scenes.

Colors are all over the place. The director obviously had no desire to give this movie a naturalistic appearance.
