Delly, the geekiest girl in the bBox!

  University: Technical University Varna
Field of study: Microsoft Information Technologies
Favorite developer tools: Eclipse, Notepad++
Favorite (technical) websites: http:// www.javaranch.com; http://www.stackoverflow.com

Delyana is the girl who would not say no to always working more and the programmer who was made to see solutions right away. Never seen such a patient, firm and pacifist girl at the same time. So, Java specialists, you have Delly to exchange ideas with!

Claudia Coches: Delly, I first posted my perception about you, written some time ago - it still hasn’t changed. In my eyes, you are the strong woman of the programmer’s team in the bBox Project, in the sense that your points of view and suggestions are always followed and valued by the three guys. How do you feel working in bBox with Paulo, Aldo and Felipe?

Delyana Tomova: “Well, the world of software development is often considered to be a male’s field. There is even this saying ‘Women programmer is like a guinea-pig. Not from Guinea nor looks like a pig’. That's why a girl must really be persistent and ferm when expressing opinions to be taken seriously by the male programmers. And now I must confess that I feel really lucky when it comes to working with the bBox boys. For such a short period since we started developing our ideas, we built a really good level of communication and distribution of tasks and, most importantly, we always provide help when needed. Thank you, guys. ”

Claudia Corches: I started being really curious ever since I found out you graduated university with a golden medal. Is it a real one or rather a figure of speech used to rank the student’s results in Bulgaria?
Delyana Tomova: “Actually the golden object is a badge with the logo of the university, but the idea is the same as of the medals in the Olympic Games. Every university rewards its students for achieving high scores during all the academic years and I ( well ... mostly my parents ) was proud to be in such a position. ”

Claudia Corches: bBox is not your first experience in Germany. You also studied in Magdeburg, developing your master thesis there. What did you write about?
Delyana Tomova: “Exactly one year before the bBox project, I participated in the Erasmus program in Magdeburg.  That was my first contact with Germany and I was really astonished by the fact that everywhere I would meet … Bulgarians. It turns out that in the University of Magdeburg are being educated more than 800 students from Bulgaria, so I felt a little bit like home. The topic of my thesis was Assessing the influence of the human factors in the process of software development’, but please, please don't make me explain to you what is that ;)”

Claudia Corches: Got it! Long and complicated story J Now, you are a Software Solutions Developer and, more specifically, a Java specialist. What led you to this level of profficiency? I guess you have a bit of your own history with Java…
Delyana Tomova: “In my university we are thaught a little bit of everything, so I had this basic idea of what Java is  and in my third year I applied for a really extreme course of Java development and I got to love it.  Still, I must say that for me every language is just syntax and formation rules, once you have the vision of how to solve problems algorithmically.”

Claudia Corches: You have worked so far as a software developer in two different companies. Tell us what was the hardest task or goal to be reached?
Delyana Tomova: “ Yes, I have now more than 2 years and a half of experience in a team and I have been blessed to work with amazing people. I think that in team work there is no personal success or failure. Yet, my biggest challenge was in my previous company when I was implementing an entire module of the application by myself at the same time with my university examination session … tuhhh a lot of nights without sleep. ”

Claudia Corches: “ Great ! Well, it's the same if we go back to bBox: I have been closely observing you and, honestly, I’m amazed: never before have I seen a young peer working with a smile on her face and seeing no obstacles in her way: ‘Why not trying this…?’ , ‘Ok, but let’s do it this way…’ How do you stay fresh?
Delyana Tomova: “ Being a developer means to be able to think of solutions to problems and I consider it natural for the work that me and boys do. I believe that exactly in such discussions are born the best implementation ideas or… at least , we all agree on a workaround.
As for the smile, well if you greet an obstacle with a smile, it might get scared away and get fixed by itself. Try it … it doesn't hurt :) ”
Claudia Corches: Aldo was talking in the interview we had about you learning a completely new programming language in only one week. That time you closely worked with him and Clara in the Apple vs. Android competition. Your feeling about it?
Delyana Tomova: “ I felt curious … I always feel curious when it comes to learning something new. This competition really put our adrenaline high! But, for me, it was really important that it didn't separate us into two fronts of a war zone and we all accepted the results with respect and dignity. Working with Aldo is really easy and he is always there to help (Thanks, Aldo! ), but sometimes he tends to put a task in a hash table and forget the key instead of adding it to a stack ;)”

Claudia Corches:  So, is bBox what you really imagined it to be or it challenges you even more? If so, in what way?
Delyana Tomova: “ I came to Karslruhe with absolutely no idea what I was going to do in this project … I knew I would have to program, but the language, device or type of application were mystery to me. So, it surprised me a lot, especially in the beginning with the creative activities and brainstorming games, because such tasks were not that familiar to me. As for the programming, yes the language was completely unknown up to 1 month ago, but now I feel good using it and I think we all are handling the application pretty good.”

Claudia Corches: What is are the things you will carry in your heart forever from all this bBox eXchange experience?
Delyana Tomova: “ All the bBox members are amazing persons which will occupy a place in my hearth forever. The attitude and working conditions that Fiducia provided for us are remarkable and I am thankful to LC Karlsruhe for their great job of getting us all matched here in sunny Karlsruhe. Thank you, guys (hugs)!!!”

Claudia Corches: “ Thanks, Delly!
